Braille and Tactile Luminance Contrast - Buildings Australia

Braille and Tactile signs in Australia must conform to a Luminance contrast - that is the plate that the braille and tactile is on must have at least 30% luminance contrast to the wall colour it is mounted, then the tactile must have a further 30% from the plate it is mounted on.

This is required for all braille and tactile, Toilet Braille and Tactile, Exit Level Braille and Tactile etc..

Below is a calculator that enables the user to input the LVR forms he painted wall - found in the specifications of front he paint manufacturers website, then add the LVR for the panel the braille is coloured - usually again found from the paint manufacturers website.

The Code is as follows:

(a) The background, negative space, fill of a sign or border with a minimum width of 5 mm must have a luminance contrast with the surface on which it is mounted of not less than 30%.

(b) Tactile characters, icons and symbols must have a minimum luminance contrast of 30% to the surface on which the characters are mounted.

(c) Luminance contrasts must be met under the lighting conditions in which the sign is to be located.

5. LightingGuide

Braille and tactile signs must be illuminated to ensure luminance contrast requirements are met at all times during which the sign is required to be read.
